Harris Self Catering Accommodation
The Isle of Harris is a small island in the group of Scottish islands known as the Outer Hebrides. Confusingly the islands are also known as the Western Isles. Furthermore the Isle of Harris is only a small (southern) part of a larger land mass, which has the Isle of Lewis to the north, which is often referred to as "the long island". Other inhabited islands of the Outer Hebrides include Barra, Scalpay and North and South Uist and there is much debate as to whether the best beaches are found on the Isle of Harris or the Uists. Personally I much prefer the beaches on Harris, Harris beaches are, usually, slightly shorter (with one or two exceptions) and backed by more hilly machair than on the much flatter expanses found in the Uists. Of course you have to keep in mind that the writer is slightly biased as he lives in South Harris!
The Isle of Harris has, for many years, continued to grow in popularity as a vacation destination and a large number of guest houses and self catering properties are to be found along the coast. However it would appear that, no matter how many new self catering houses and cottages are built or converted, there never seems to be sufficient to meet demand, especially during peak season. Some self catering cottages are so popular that they are often booked more than twelve months in advance and it is vitally important that you check with the accommodation providers at your earliest opportunity as to whether a property is available to hire or not. There are also times when other forms of accommodation on Harris seem to be fully booked so the best advice we can give is that you book as soon as you can.
Other Accommodation on the Isle of Harris
Staying in Harris self catering accommodation may give you some idea of what it may be like to live on the Isle of Harris but if you like you vacation accommodation to be more luxurious and you would rather have somebody else care for your needs then you will be happy to hear that Harris bed and breakfast accommodation is amongst the best there is. The Isle of Harris is well known for it's hospitality and the friendly folk that live here and staying in a small, family run Harris guest house or B&B you will quickly appreciate the lengths that some owners go to to ensure that you have the finest vacation possible. Your host will be extremely approachable and highly helpful, especially if you need advice on where to visit. While there may not be many Harris hotels there are plenty of bed & breakfast guest houses available if Harris self catering is not for you.
