Isle of Harris Self Catering Cottages

The is something special about a cottage and many people who visit the Isle of Harris in the Outer Hebrides/Western Isles of Scotland like to stay in a self catering cottage in preference to a self catering house. The most obvious reason to stay in a self catering cottage is that all the rooms are on the same level and therefore perfect for folk who are either elderly or less mobile than others. One of the other reasons why some prefer a cottage is that they can just tumble into their accommodation exhausted, after a full day enjoying the pleasures of the Isle of Harris, and straight to bed without having to face a climb up the stairs!

For most of it's history the Isle of Harris was populated by people who lived in homes that only had the one floor. One of the types of property closely associated with the island is known as a blackhouse. A blackhouse was a cottage like building with a thatch of straw or heather which had extremely thick walls and small windows. This highly adaptable form of housing was inhabited by the vast majority of islanders with the last being inhabited into the 1960's and beyond. In recent decades some have been renovated to todays modern standards and some, like the one at Borvemor listed below, have been built using age old methods but completely modernized.
